Pittsburgh Pirates - 1972
The 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates were the defending World Champions and once again won the NL East with a record of 96-59. They lost in the playoffs to the Cincinnati Reds 3-2.
I still remember watching that 5th game as the Reds rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth. George Foster scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Bob Moose.
1972 was also the final year for Roberto Clemente who would die in that tragic plane crash while bringing assistance to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He did, however, collect his 3000th hit before he left us too soon.
