In 1973, the Pirates took the field for the first time without their great star and leader Roberto Clemente, who died during the offseason following the 1972 campaign. In honor of Clemente, the Pirates wore black strips on their sleeves and later placed a Clemente #21 patch on the sleeve of each jersey.
Perhaps due to the shock of events, the Pirates stumbled to a 80-82 record and finished 3rd in the NL East but only 2.5 games behind the 1st place new York Mets.
