NABA TEAM HISTORY
Sioux Fall Cowboys
The Sioux Fall Cowboys are one of the NABA's original 16 teams. Founded in 1900 by 57yo Business man Danny Nicholson, the Cowboys have enjoyed some success. Sporting a 938-908 record, .508 pct., the Cowboys have reached the playoffs one time, back in 1905, advancing all the way to the NABA World Series, but unable to win the title.
Vernon Alexander is the teams general manager of the Sioux Fall Cowboys. Alexander was hired on in 1905 as a rookie general manager and put togather the roster that took the team to the World Series that season. Since then, times have become alittle tougher for the 48yo Alexander.
Lorenzo Martinez is the current manager of the Cowboys and has been with the team since 1908. Martinez has managed the club to a 259-289 record, with 2 third place finishes and a fourth place finish in the Yankee Leagues tough West Divison. Prior to coming to manage the Cowboys Martinez had spent 3 seasons with the Raleigh Rebels, one as the bench coach and two as the team's manager.
Despite the lack of winning seasons in Sioux Falls, the Cowboys continually rank as one of the leagues best when it comes to attendance. Cowboys fans are a loyal bunch, and even with one fo the leagues lowest payrolls continue to come out in droves to support their team.
Who is the face of the Cowboys franchise you ask? Well, that would be one Cesar Gomez. Gomez is the teams all time leader in at bats (3597), hits (920), Doubles (178), Triples (100), RBI's (357) and stolen bases (307) The 28yo Gomez has spent 10 seasons roaming centerfield for the Cowboys.
If Gomez is the teams offensive leader, then you have to ask yourself, who is the teams pitching leader, and that would be none other then Manuel Lucero. The 29yo Lucero is an 8 time all star, and in 1905 won the NABA's coveted Golden Arm award, posting a 27-14 record with a 1.88 ERA. Gomez tops the teams leader boards in Wins (198), Complete Games (314), Shut outs (45), Innings pitched (3252.2) and strike outs (1549).
The Sioux Fall Cowboys are afflilated with the Newbury Archers of the NABA's Double AA league, and the Oxnard Mules of the NABA's Rookie League, and currently have the #2 ranked farm system in the NABA.
Sioux Fall's top rookie position prospects are 18yo Centerfielder Dionizy Glogowski (#43 currently with Oxnard Mules), 20yo Shortstop Roberto Delgado (#77 currently with Oxnard Mules) and 18yo Shortstop Edward Holbrook (#88 currently with Newbury Archers).
Sioux Fall's top pitching prospects are 19yo Kakhi Yunusov (#11 currently with Oxnard Mules), 22yo David Scott (#13 currently with Oxnard Mules) and 23yo Brett Horne (#41 currently with the Newbury Archers.) Sioux Falls also has the #42, #48, #53, #58, #59, #66, #67, #70, #83 and #90 ranked pitching prospects, making their farm system the most pitching rich in the NABA.
The future does in deed look bright for the Cowboys and their fans.
