ARLON RACES BY KENWOOD IN TU WEST
The Kenwood Wildcats went into July with a 3-game bulge over the Arlon Champions, went into a 13-16 spin and came out trailing by three games as the Champs rambled to a sparkling 19-10 record... there are no other challengers in the hunt... Bayview is in third and trails by 11 games and Rolling Hills is fourth, 13 games back in the pennant chase.
Arlon is looking for its first playoff slot since 2020... the Champs have outstanding pitching and adequate offense... everything points to them as the TU East winner... they have a solid starting four in Ronny Farnsworth (12-6/3/12), Lanny Gray (13-10/3.11), Emil Nowak (16-6/3.61) and Pat Stuyvesant (12-7/4.02)... Gray is leading the IPA with 200 Ks in 225 innings... the relief corps is impressive, too... All-Star LF Mark Cameron (.319/33/89/80) is having a super year and is third in the league in homers, RBIs and runs... All-Star C Nick Shafer has added 17 HRs, 63 RBIs and 52 runs, while batting .304... there isn't much after that in the batting order.
Kenwood was seventh last year and forecast for fifth in the preseason poll, but better pitching and hitting has had them in first place much of the season until the July slump... Glen Murray (15-9/3.16) and Robby Barnhill (9-3/2.91) have been the mound mainstays... Rusty Bradford is 14-4, but doesn't have a lot of quality starts and has been relegated to spot starting and the relief corps... reliever Artemus Hale (7-1/2.55/7 saves) is the bullpen ace... three players still carry the club... 2B Country Crowder (.339/4/41/57) has had a very impressive rookie season and is running second in the batting title race to the great Adam Thurgood of North Hills... Thurgood is hitting .340 thus far... superstud All-Star C Corky DiNozzo is batting .321 with 26 HRs, 74 RBIs and 54 runs... old reliable LF Harry Tashina has a .309 BA, 9 HRs, 48 RBIs and 62 runs... don't give up on the Wildcats, they could easily get back on the right track and back in the race.
The third place Bayview Vikings can score runs and boom the ball into the bleachers with regularity... the Viks are first in homers (175) in the IPA and third in scoring (581)... they had a great 19-10 July, but probably are too far behind to challenge this year, being 11 games out... slugging star All-Star 2B Jerry Culpepper (.298/38/84/74) is having another banner year with his IPA-leading 38 homers... other run producers are RF Roy Ricks (.310/19/49/73), SS Andreas Stokke (.271/18/51/58) and LF Derek Jorstad (.276/11/43/67)... Vance Codsworth (14-10/4.07) is the staff's biggest winner... with Christy Kane (10-11/3.26) and Karl Magga (9-8/3.73) the most effective.
The Rolling Hills Reds have a good offense (.271 BA-6th), but tainted pitching (4.18 ERA-24th)... the Reds got off to a fine start in the early going, but have since had losing records the last two months... July was only 13-16... star All-Star 3B Billy Christianson (.325/10/48/45) was lost for the season at the beginning of the month to a shoulder injury...rookie All-Star 1B Darwin Tard is one of the team leaders with a .300 BA, 18 HRs, 57 RBIs and 65 runs... RF Jimbo Foxx is another good bat in the line-up with a .290 BA, 21 HRs, 64 RBIs and 61 runs... Veteran CF Scotty Yiska (.307/16/49/38) is doing great in a platoon role... only two pitchers Matthew Christianson (14-7/3.17) and Whammer White (10-8/3.92) have been adequate... Rolling Hills is three games above .500 and in fourth place.
The Denton City Redbirds were selected the second-best team in the division during the preseason, but after four months they are in the fifth spot in the standings, one game under .500 and 15 games out of first... after good runs in May and June, they fell back to 13-16 last month... the Redbirds have a solid offense with a .270 BA (8th), 551 runs (3rd) and 139 HRs (5th), but only average pitching (3.84 ERA-16th)... the top bat is All-Star 1B Wayman Stetson (.309/32/89/67)... Stetson is ranked fourth in RBIs and sixth in homers in the IPA... he got some help from RF Pete Doyle (.287/19/70/76), SS Sammy Thornton (.298/6/28/70), C Felton Welch (.278/18/65/52), LF Sam Carson (.261/18/65/52) and 3B Rod Hunt (.250/22/63/65)... Denton City has a good set of starters: Francisco Salcido (13-11/3.61), Kevin Blevins (12-10/3.72), Troy McIntosh (11-12/3.29) and Stephen Edwards (7-7/3.14/6 saves)... however, the bullpen is lousy (4.54 ERA-30th).
For the third year in a row the Chicopee Braves will probably come in near the bottom of the division... they are in sixth place, 19 games back of first place Arlon... the Braves have average to good bats with a .265 BA (11th), 510 runs (14th) and 129 HRs (9th)... pitching is mediocre with a 4.05 team ERA (20th)... the best of the bats are star 3B Kurt Gustavsen (.330/23/68/66) and CF Big Jim Moran (.261/23/70/65)... the Braves also have a good core of regulars that pitch in with some productive hitting... vets Lou Gianakos (14-11/3.420 and Heyoka Chaska (11-8/3.43) are the most capable starters... a recent addition to the starting rotation rookie Pete Caravante (4-3/2.36) looks like a very good one after eight starts.
The La Claire Lynx won the pennants the last two years, but they have fallen on hard times in 2039... nothing has gone right for them on the hill or at the plate... they were 12-17 in July... the Lynx have dropped to seventh place and 22 games behind... Tony Rossi (12-11/4.20) leads the club in wins... Pat Kovacs (9-12/3.27) has the best ERA... and Terry Baird (5-5/1.70/13 saves) is the best in the bullpen... the bats are really bad... 1B Eddy Veevers (.301/8/46/45) and 2B Sam Norman (.290/15/41/49) has been pretty good, but not so the rest... CF Billy Holland is the club leader with 49 RBIs and 49 runs, but is batting only .255 with 11 HRs.
The last-place Bay St. Clair Buccaneers have had a rocky season as well... forecast for sixth, they have nestled safely in the TU West basement, 28 games out of first... the Bucs were 13-16 in the last month... they sport a .254 BA (21st) and a 4.35 ERA (27th)... the only productive batters are RF Cotton Cornwall (.314/23/65/48) and CF Gilbert Bauer (.299/16/62/51)... Pete Cross (7-3/2.55/7 saves) in the bullpen is the only pitcher worth mentioning.
