RUTHLANDIAN UNION SINGLE-GAME PLAYOFFS

SLIGO BEST IN THE WEST
154 games were not enough to separate Sligo and Volusia in the Ruthlandian West race... it took one more to break the tie... and the winner is: the Sligo Rovers... the Rovers piled up a substantial 7-3 lead after eight and half innings, then held on to whip the Volusia Vigilantes 7-5 in a single-game playoff for the the division flag.

CF Joe McGarrett (.304) and RF Pat Foreman led the Rovers' 10-hit attack... McGarrett went 2-for-5 and drive in three runs, while Foreman (.260) had three hits, scored twice and batted in a pair... Volusia was led by LF Kerry Keller (.261) with a two-run homer and RF Lonnie Womack with a two-run double... 1B Kris Wilson (.343) added five hits, scored two and batted in a run for the losers.

Randall Steele (25-8/3.25) notched the win in a rough outing... Steele allowed five runs on 8 hits in eight-plus innings... he fanned seven and walked four... Joey Hicks (9-12/4.15) relieved in the last of the night and got the final two outs and his 10th save of the year... loser Raul Navarro (13-18/3.21) was rapped for six runs on eight hits in seven frames.

HELLER HALTS RATTLERS 5-1, COLD CREEK TOP CATS IN EAST
All year long in the Ruthlandian East Cold Creek had the pitching and Sugar Valley had the bats... in the end Peter Heller's good pitching beat the Rattlers' good bats... Heller fired a 5-1 victory over Sugar Valley in the single-game playoff that decided the RU East... Heller stymied them on three hits, while the Catamounts were racking up 10... they broke it open with four runs in the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie... John-Michal Krikma singled in the game-winning score... Jeremy Hall singled in two more runs... and CF Ken Brennan completed the scoring with an RBI single... that was more than enought to send Cold Creek to the Pro Cup playoffs.

Heller (20-6/2.29) went the distance in a masterpiece performance, striking out six and allowing only one base on balls... Heller won 20 games for the first time in his 13-year career... Josh Wilkerson (15-8/3.26) did his best, but suffered the loss... he surrendered only two runs and six hits in seven and one-third innings with five Ks and five walks.

SS Jeremy Hall (.286) sparked the win with three hits and two runs batted in... C Arved Tarand (.294) collected three hits and scored a run... CF Ken Brennan (.303) added a pair of hits and an RBI and 1B John-Michal Krikma (.246) scored twice and batted in one... the Catamounts banged out 10 singles in all... CF Bobby Gamble (.310) hit his 36th homer for the Rattlers' only run.
