I personally play mostly fictional universes - I don't like bringing over any real feelings I may have for certain real players into my sim. I do like to play some random debut from time to time though.
If you're starting out, I would recommend a small league - not too many teams, that way you can keep track of who has what, rivalries, etc. I personally feel fictional is better for this but it's up to you.
