'83-'84 Off-Season
02/15/1984 - Reds Do It Again
As speculation mounted into the morning, rumors over a final agreement between Juan Berenguer and Cincinnati became a reality, with the star opting for a $2,340,000 deal over 3 years. Over his career, Berenguer has pitched in 310 games, fashioned a 2.70 ERA, earned 165 saves, fanned 324 in 330.1 innings with opposing batters hitting .229 against him. He has won 21 games and dropped 34 during his time in the league. However, in a curious move the Reds brass will make one of the premier closers of the past 5 years a setup man to recently signed Mardie Cornejo. It remains to be seen how happy Berenguer is with his new role.
