Came across
a recent SABR article about the evolution of pitcher rotations, and below are the periods in which the various rotations were prevalent:
1871-1878: 1 man rotation
1879-1886: 2 man rotation
1887-1897: 3 man rotation
1898-1924: 4 man rotation
1925-present: 5 man rotation
So the table above looks a little aggressive in the moves from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4, and very very aggressive in the move to 5.
This is a simplistic overview of the article, but it is directionally accurate. So if you wanted to replicate your own version of the American major leagues throughout history, you might consider holding off on the 5-man until the mid 20s, for the most part.
