Ruthlandian Union
RATTLERS WIN OPENER, DUNSBERRY BEATS V'S 4-2
In the first game of the Ruthlandian Division Series Sugar Valley got great pitching from Christopher Dunsberry to whip Volusia 4-2 on the road at the Jailhouse... Dunsberry (1-0) blanked the Vigilantes on two hits for eight innings, struck out eight and walked three... he outpitched the V's ace Drew Selby (0-1), who was touched for four runs on eight hits with four walks and six Ks... Selby hurled a complete game... Dunsberry gave the Rattlers a 4-0 lead after eight innings... Volusia roughed up reliever Joe Snow in the ninth for two runs and three hits.
Sugar Valley outhit Volusia 8 to 5 and was paced by RF Jeff Harvey with two hits and three RBIs... and by SS Roger Hobbs with four hits and two runs scored... 1B Kris Wilson and RF Lonny Womack led the losers with an RBI each.
VIPERS ROCK CRUSHERS 8-3 IN GAME ONE
In game one of the RU Division Series at Lakefront Park Valmara rocked hometown Crystal Lake for 12 hits en route to an 8-3 bashing, sparked by the solid pitching of Teddy Twardzik, who went the distance... He permitted 10 hits, but only three runs... a four-run fourth put them ahead 6-1 and paved the way for the victorious Vipers... Eddie Lane (0-1) took the drubbing, allowing six runs on four hits in his four innings.
SS Antos Dacko hit a two-run homer and 3B Ken Jensen drilled a two-run double for the Vipers... 2B Jim Henley led the Crushers with three hits and two RBIs.
Tycobbian Union
HAWKS WIN IN 15TH ON FERGUSON DOUBLE
In the first game of the Tycobbian Division Series at the Hawk's Nest, North Hills and Southport battled long and hard in a 15-inning thriller won by the Hawks 6-5 on Jimmy Jay Ferguson's two-run double... North Hills had to come back from a 2-0 deficit against 26-game winner Billy Hoover to pull it off... they tagged him for single runs in the eighth, ninth and tenth... the Hawks had to score a run in the last of the ninth to even the score at 2-all, in the bottom of the tenth to tie it up 3-3, another run in the last of the fourteenth to knot it at 4-4 and needed two to win it in the fifteenth in a fantastic finish.
Hoover worked into the tenth for the Sun Sox and gave up three runs on nine hits... David Michael tossed eight good innings for the Hawks and yielded just two runs on nine hits... neither starter got the decision... the win went Kyle Oliver (1-0), the fourth and final North Hills' hurler... he was tagged for a run in the top of the fifteenth, but Ferguson saved the day for him with his walk-off hit... Wayne Stewart (0-1) came on in the fifteenth with the score tied 5-5 and gave up the winning score for the loss.
Each club collected 15 hits... 3B Jim McDermott, CF Kris Anastas and RF Jimmy Jay Ferguson all contributed two doubles each to the Hawks' attack... CF Barney Lewis and RF Robert Martin both had solo homers for Southport.
SORENSEN SHARP, STALLIONS TOP ARLON 7-1
Two of the stars from last year's Pro Cup champion picked up where they left off, leading South Fork to a 7-1 victory over Arlon in the opening game of the TU Division Series... Chris Sorensen (1-0) went all the way stopping Arlon on just one run and five hits... and last year's Pro Cup MVP SS Jess Wilkerson belted four hits... Lanny Gray was the losing pitcher... he departed after seven and a third innings, trailing 6-1.
The Stallions snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth on C Paul Richardson's two-run single... then wrapped up the win with three more in the eighth... 3B Elton Jacoby added three hits and two RBIs to the South Fork attack... and RF John Dunham chipped three hits and scored twice... 1B Robby Westin homered in the second for the Champs' only run.
