They held up their hands and admitted they got their priorities wrong. They were doing their best to make as many people as possible happy (i.e. those interested in modern hockey, historic hockey and fantasy stuff). But in doing so they stretched themselves too thinly. There's no point going round in circles on this. It has been debated to death and the devs are well aware of the different views held in the forum. They're working on it and things are slowly but surely getting better.

The devs are working all hours of the day to develop the game. The last thing they are is lazy. Jeff mentioned in the Beta Forum the other day he'd had 5 hours' sleep between the last Saturday and the last Wednesday. Spending 23 hours per day in the build up to the patch is hardly lazy (in fact it's insanely dedicated).
And on top of that there's a small group of dedicated testers helping iron out the final kinks before the upcoming patch.
Btw, OOTP is a baseball game. They can't use a baseball engine to simulate hockey. Hence the OOTP engine couldn't be worked with. They had to build the game from scratch.
