Sorry but I am not familiar with Gimp at all... You may want to make a new thread and ask your questions there, for there are several guys that know Gimp and can help you...
I use PaintShop Pro and mostly now use Photoshop Elements 11 with Elements XXL add-on to improve its features... In Elements you can add a fill layer that is linked to the jersey base or some other layer you need to fill and this makes it easy to change those colors... You can also use the paint bucket or fill tool to fill a layer with color... Using the fill tool or paint bucket tool you may need to adjust the tolerance level to get the correct level of color fill you want in the layer... Too much and it will distort the edges and too little will not fill the area entirely... You just have to play around with it...
