Heck, there are probably 5 (on an average season) firings in an actual NHL season.
The firing frequency is based on data in a 2006 study published in Managerial and Decision Economics. The average number of coaching departures in the NHL over a 30-year period ending in 2002 was 11.2 per season (with the league much smaller than it is now in many of those years.) A small number of those were retirements, but the vast majority were firings/non-renewals. I also checked more recent seasons, and that average appears to have held steady.

What may be a bit out of balance is the number of in-season firings vs. the number of post-season ones. We don't seem to be getting enough of the latter, when the ratio should be about 2:1. But the total number is in the right range.

Firing multiple coaches in quick succession isn't intended, there are big negative modifiers to the firing chance for the second coach in a season. So something's going wrong there and we'll check it out.

The owner patience ratings need some review, too - the Detroit firings happen because the Wings are having a weak season after a long period of success. Mike Ilitch, though, seems to be more patient than that, so that'll get reflected when I update the owner data. But I have seen more than a few "fire Babcock" comments from Wings fans in the last couple of years, at least prior to the Olympics.
