Thanks all - I ended up putting him on the 60-Day DL (even though he only had a week left where he was injured), and then designated him for assignment when he was eligible to come off the DL.

I have been selecting "waive and designate for assignment" when I need to free up a 40-man slot - would it be smarter to just waive them, and then remove them from the 40-man once they clear waivers? When you waive a player, does it immediately free up a slot on the 40-man?

Incidentally - at the beginning of my league's 2017 season, the AI decided that MLB changed rules and got rid of the idea of minor league options entirely. I thought that was pretty funny.
