Dave Valek felt that he had nothing left to prove in the Canadian Baseball League, so when the San Francisco 49'ers gave him a chance to come to play in the National Baseball League he jumped at the chance. Many felt he would be overmatched, but the 30 year old proved everyone wrong by hitting .364, driving in 15 runs, and scoring another 14 runs to win the National League Outstanding Hitter Award. Chris Gulch of the Cardinals, with
Robby Jackson of the Blues finishing third.
