Rockies, Reds strike blockbuster deal

Colorado Rockies Receive - Cincinnati Reds Receive
SP Mat Latos - OF Carlos Gonzalez / SP Jordan Lyles
10-7 3.76 ERA 122.0 IP 0.95 WHIP 125 K (ML) - .284 AVG .816 OPS 13 HR 45 RBI 8 SB (ML) / 8-7 5.40 ERA 98.1 IP 1.56 WHIP 58 K (ML)

This was a huge deal which I am incredibly excited about. We knew from the beginning of the season that pitching was the problem for this team, and it has certainly proved that up until this point. Currently, our squad is ranked 13th in the National League in starters ERA (4.46), and 15th in the NL in bullpen ERA (4.39). The deal a few weeks ago that brought in Seth Maness helped to increase our pitching depth going forward; but this deal provided us with an ace for the future. 26-year old Mat Latos will be a huge boost to our current Rockies pitching staff. Jhoulys Chacin and (especially) Jorge De La Rosa have struggled down the stretch, and the hope is that Latos will be able to bring an end to some of those pitching struggles. So far in 2014 Latos is 10-7 with a 3.76 ERA. Latos also has an impressive 0.95 WHIP and a highly productive 3.00 FIP.

The big name heading back to the Reds is 28-year old outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. I've had moving Gonzalez as an option for a while now, mainly due to his high future contract hit; he is due $53,000,000 over the next 3 years. Additionally, Gonzalez has been relatively expendable on this high-powered offensive squad. Prior to leaving, Gonzalez was ranked 6th on the team in batting average (.284), 3rd in home runs (13), and 6th in runs batted in (45). 23-year old Jordan Lyles, on the other hand, was the guy the Reds wanted to complete the deal; that was an easy decision for me to make. Lyles has struggled all year as a starter, illustrated most of all by his sky-high 1.56 WHIP. Moving Lyles will now allow either Brett Anderson or Maness to step-up as the fifth starter in the rotation.

As mentioned above, this move makes sense both strategically and fiscally. Latos is due $7,500,000 for the rest of this year and will be eligible for arbitration come the end of the season. However, early indication is that we will be able to secure him for less than we would be paying Gonzalez over the next few years.
