  1. No. I don't think it becomes apparent some times until the game repeatedly crashes or will not start at all.
  2. Yes, unfortunately. That is why, if you want to be super-cautious, you may want to save and save multiple backups. Even then, what appears to be a clean restore may already have the seeds of file corruption and you end up in the same boat anyway.
So perhaps the best way to deal with file corruption is to avoid overdoing the bulleted points in my response above while at the same time not living in fear of it. Stuff happens but I would not let it overly limit your game-playing freedom and flexibility, and therefore your fun.
