I disagree; ratings are nice, but past performance is a much better predictor of future performance. Some guys will never play up to their ratings, even if they're 100% accurate.
Ratings do give you kind of a baseline -- "what could I expect from this player, all else being equal?" -- but I'd trust the past performance first. The one exception is guys who haven't played in the majors; ratings are your best bet there, because minor league stats can vary wildly.
