Just came across an old story of his recall from the minors to San Diego. He was pitching at Alexandria of the Texas League, endured some kind of 16-hour bus trip to San Antonio, arrived at 7 AM on July 13, 1973, got in two or three hours of sleep, got up and went to the movies.
That's when the Padres called Alexandria telling them to put him on a plane. Took awhile to find him - still at the theater - and he then made his flight to San Diego with only minutes to spare. He arrives that night, gets to Jack Murphy Stadium after the game has started, and manager Don Zimmer knows nothing of his trip, just that he was there and he was a fresh arm. Threw him in for his big league debut in the 9th.
