Tony Taylor

My thanks to Braves 70 for the Terrific shot of Tony Taylor in his Detroit Tigers days in the section directly above.. After 2 1/2 productive seasons (1971-1973) with Detroit, Tony had 1,955 career hits. He returned to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1974 where he had been extremely popular in a previous stint (1960-1971). It took Taylor about all of 1974 & 1975 to get the 45 hits he needed to reach the 2,000 hits milestone, with most of them coming as pinch hits. His milestone 2,000th hit (a bunt) was delivered on the next-to-last day of the '75 season. Taylor returned for a 19th and final MLB season (and
15th season with the Phillies) in 1976, but was injured most of the year and he finished his career with 2,007 hits in the big leagues. (1958-1976 - Cubs, Phillies, Tigers and Phillies again). He was elected in 2002 to the Phillies HOF - The Philadelphia Wall Of Fame. He originally was signed out of Cuba for the 1954 season by the New York Giants for their farm system, but was acquired later by the Chicago Cubs for whom Taylor made his major leagues debut in 1958. . Born 12/19/35, he is 78.
