Lolich Rides The New York Victory Train

Mickey Lolich (2-0, 3.18 ERA) keeps the New York victory train going as he leads the Mets to a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia - their seventh win in eight games. Lolich strikes out nine in the complete game win, allowing seven hits with one run and Dave Kingman (.310, 2 HR, 6 RBI) delivers a solo home run off of loser Steve Carlton (1-1, 1.38 ERA), who gets a complete game in the loss.

Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees
Catfish Hunter (2-0, 2.22 ERA) outduels Vida Blue and the A's, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six over eight innings in a 3-1 New York victory - snapping Oakland's four game winning streak. Blue (2-1, 3.38 ERA) was solid in defeat, giving up eight hits and three runs in eight innings.

California Angels at New York Yankees
Angles second baseman Jerry Remy (.206, 7 RBI) delivers an RBI single in the the top of the 10th inning and gets a gift insurance run on an error at first base by Otto Velez (his 2nd) as California gets by the Yankees, 3-1. Frank Tanana (1-0, 0.44 ERA) pitches another gem to get his first win of the season, striking out 10 while allowing seven hits and one run in nine innings. Dock Ellis (1-2, 4.26 ERA) takes the loss in his fourth inning of relief of starter Larry Gura (1.54 ERA).

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago White Sox
Chicago starter Bart Johnson (1-1, 3.74 ERA) struggles with control issues as he walks six, but it is enough to get the White Sox past Milwaukee, 3-2. Johnson gives up six hits over eight innings, striking out four and allowing two runs. Don Money (.297, 2 HR, 6 RBI) hits a solo home run for the Brewers while starter Jerry Augustine (0-1, 1.80 ERA) goes the distance in the loss.

Before the game, Chicago announced they had signed pitcher Terry Forster (2-1, 6.43 ERA) to a 1-year contact extension worth $80,000.

Detroit Tigers
Detroit announced that backup catcher Milt May had been optioned to Triple A Evansville and that catcher Bruce Kimm (.444, 1 RBI, 9 AB - AAA) has been called up to replace him.

Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox
The White Sox avoid a three-game sweep as Bucky Dent (.292, 3 RBI) delivers a two-out, RBI single off of Ken Holtzman (0-1, 9.00 ERA) in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chicago a 7-6 win over the Orioles. Ralph Garr (.375, 1 HR, 6 RBI) scores three runs - including the game winner - and comes within a single from hitting for the cycle, hitting a triple in the fourth inning, a three-run home run in the fifth and a double in the 12th. Lamar Johnson (.394, 6 RBI) and Pat Kelly (.176) also have three hit days as the White Sox out hit Baltimore, 16-8. Reggie Jackson (.208, 1 HR, 6 RBI) hits a three-run home run, his first home run as an Oriole and Paul Blair (.158, 1 HR, 2 RBI) adds a solo shot in the loss.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs
Bill Madlock (.471, 2 HR, 6 RBI) helps snap a four-game losing streak, hitting a single, an RBI double and a two-run home run as the Cubs emerge victorious over Pittsburgh, 5-3. Jose Cardenal (.429, 5 RBI) has three hits and a run batted in while Andre Thornton (.190, 1 HR, 1 RBI) adds a solo home run to help on offense for Chicago. Richie Zisk (.286, 1 HR, 1 RBI) hits a double and a solo home run while Bill Robinson (.323) hits a double and two singles in the loss.

San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds
Dave Winfield (.368, 2 HR, 10 RBI) hits a colossal three-run home run then later triples as the Padres get by Cincinnati, 6-5. Pete Rose (.370, 2 RBI) has three hits with a double, Dave Concepcion (.410) also has three hits and Johnny Bench (.229, 3 HR, 12 RBI) adds a two-run home run for the Reds.

Padres starter Dave Freisleben (5.21 ERA) fails to take the mound for the sixth inning as injuries continue to plague the starting rotation. No word has been given as to his condition nor the status of Brent Strom, who went down on Friday.
