2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 5
Ruthlandian Union
CLAXTON HANGS IN, WINS 5-4 IN 14 INNINGS
Hanging in by the skin of their teeth, the Claxton Diamonds staved off elimination from the Ruthlandian LCS in game five with a dramatic 5-4 decision over the Sugar Valley Rattlers at home at Avalon Stadium... the win cut the Rattlers' lead down to 3-2 in the best-of-seven series... Ryne Akins singled in Jojo DeLucca from third in the last of the 14th inning for the winning score... DeLucca got new life leading off the inning when third baseman Roger Hobbs booted his groundball.
In a seesaw affair Claxton took a 3-0 lead after three innings, but Sugar Valley came back and tied it up at 3-3 in the eighth... the Rattlers went up 4-3 in the top of the 11th, but the Diamonds rallied and knotted it up again in the bottom half of the inning, then finally won it in the 14th.
Both clubs got excellent relief work from the bullpens... Claxton's Gilbert Clagsdale (1-1/4.42) pitched two perfect frames in the 9th and 10th... and winner Gary Haskin (1-0/1.69) held the Rattlers to one run and four hits in the final four innings... Chris Dunsberry (0-0/0.00) blanked the Diamonds for four innings, departing after the 10th... Domenico Renterias (0-0/2.57/3 saves) blew a save when he allowed a run in the 11th, but he stopped Claxton in the 12th and 13th... Davy Brennan (0-1/2.16) was the losing pitcher... he gave up one unearned run in the fatal 14th.
Both starters did fair work... Claxton's Stan Yudash (1-2/6.06) tossed eight innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks... Sugar Valley's Cullen Winslow (3-0/2.20) went six frames and permitted three runs on eight hits, walking five and fanning two.
Claxton posted 12 hits in the game with C Ryne Akins (.211) and rookie LF Whit Miley (.442) leading the way with three hits and 2 RBIs apiece... 1B Jojo DeLucca (.333) went 2-for-5, scored the winning run and drove in a run... SS Pete McCormick (.205) had three hits and two RBIs for the Rattlers... and C Delmer Campbell (.268) smacked two hits and drove in two runs.
The Diamonds will try to even the series at three games each tomorrow afternoon in Sugar Valley at Farmers Memorial Park... the Rattlers are 4-1 at home in the playoffs, while Claxton is 2-2 on the road... Steven Ellison (18-9/3.79) gets the assignment for the Diamonds and it'll be Joe Snow (19-4/2.29) for Sugar Valley... it will be Ellison's first start in the playoffs this season... he has made only one poor relief appearance so far... Ellison is 0-0 with a sky-high 10.13 ERA in two innings of relief... Snow has done well with a 2-1 mark in three starts with a fine 2.78 ERA... he beat the Diamonds 9-3 in game three at Claxton.
