2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 7
Ruthlandian Union
CINDERELLA CLAXTON COPS BERTH IN PRO CUP FINALS
The unheralded Claxton Diamonds are apparently for real... just ask the Valmara Vipers and Sugar Valley Rattlers... a Pro Cup longshot at best, the Diamonds have now disposed of the number two and three picks to win the Pro Cup... they toppled Sugar Valley 3-2 in game seven of the Ruthlandian League title series to cop an unexpected berth in the IPA Pro Cup Finals against the fifth-ranked Rolling Hills Reds of the Tycobbian Union, who conquered the fourth-rated High Mesa Cowboys and the top-ranked Southport Sun Sox.
The Diamonds were down 3-1 in the series, but came back to win the final three games, two of them on Sugar Valley's home ground... In game seven played at Farmers Memorial Park in Sugar Valley, Diamond ace Abe Schiffman (2-1/2.42) bested the Rattlers' best Antonio Cedeno (2-3/4.23) in a sharp pitchers' duel... Schiffman only allowed two runs and both of them were unearned, stopping the heavy-hitting Rattlers on just five hits... Schiffman fanned five and walked only one in an outstanding complete game... Cedeno also went all the way, yielding three runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out three.
C Ryne Akins (.259) put Claxton ahead 1-0 in the first with an RBI single that scored RF Roger Jackson (.200)... four innings later they made it 3-0 when SS Stevie Wynn (.310) doubled in Schiffman (.300) and CF Darryl Daniels (.340)... Schiffman held the Rattlers at bay until the ninth when they cut it to 3-2 and had the winning runs on second and third with two outs... Schiffman got out of it when SS Pete McCormick (.178) lined out to second base... LF Jeff Harvey's (.400) two-run double was the big blow of the short-lived rally.
Claxton skipper Dixie Baker told reporters, "I can't say enough about Schiffman... when we need it he also picks us up and carries us... he was mighty good today in game seven." He added, "It's unbelievable what we have done... beating Sugar Valley three straight after trailing 3-1 in the series is remarkable... Today we got fine pitching, but it was our hitting that won the series... Jojo has been great... and Whit and Darryl have been special, too."
Superstar Jojo DeLucca is hitting .362 in the playoffs with 3 HRs and 18 RBIs... he has a fair shot at setting a new IPA RBI mark... Barney Lewis of Southport holds the record with 23 set in 2044... rookie phenom LF Whit Miley is batting .412 this postseason with 2 roundtrippers and 13 RBIs... and CF Darryl Daniels has hit .340 with 16 runs scored.
Bobby Gamble, playing manager for the Rattlers commended the Diamonds, "They have a tough lineup to get through... it was their bats that beat us... our starting pitching was spotty and the Diamonds took advantage of it."
