Raul Galata

Raul Galata was a pitcher with the Indianapolis Clowns from 1949 to 1953. He is shown here in the uniform of a Venezuelan Winter League team.

The Negro Baseball Register in THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK, edited by Dick Clark and Larry Lester, and THE BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEGRO LEAGUES, by James Riley, both list a separate pitcher by the name of Domingo Galata, who pitched for the New York Cubans in 1949 and perhaps 1950 (Riley doesn't mention 1950). I think he is the same fellow.

Baseball-reference.com gives the formal name of Raul Galata as Domingo Raul Galata Capote.

Raul Galata was well known for having pitched in the Mexican League. On December 10, 1954, the Seattle Daily Times reported that the Seattle Capilanos of the Western International Baseball League had recently acquired Raul Galata, who had previously pitched in Venezuela and Mexico. But five days earlier, the same newspaper mentioned that the Seattle general manager reported the acquisition of Domingo Galata, a left-handed pitcher, who had been in the Mexican League the year before. So the same newspaper was referring to the same player by both names. Furthermore, I found a Spanish-language newspaper in San Antonio which cited him as Domingo Raul Galata when reporting on his exploits while he was pitching for Monterrey in Mexico.

The ENCICLOPEDIA DEL BEISBOL MEXICANO lists his date of birth as Oct. 5, 1930, and says he was born in Havana, Cuba.
