During his first year in pro ball, Bill Haynes actually played more games at third base than at any other position. But I would agree with you, Merkle, that for the rest of his minor league career, Haynes was definitely a first baseman, and it was my error in not picking that up. This question about his playing position prompted me to try to learn what position he played for the Royals during spring training games. Using on-line historical copies of the Sporting News, I couldn't find his name in Royals' box scores at all for spring games in 1969. For 1972, I only found him once in a spring game for the Royals, and he was a pinch hitter in that case.
