First Ever Qualifying Match Played
Decides Southern Section Promotion.

An historic match was played at Gillingham yesterday afternoon. Because of a revision in the laws of the game enacted prior to the season, the promotion spot at the top of the Southern Section table was decided by playing a qualifier, rather than awarding the promotion to the club who had achieved the better run difference during the season. So, instead of giving the spot to the Swansea town club by dint of their 41 runs advantage against the Gills, the Jacks were forced instead to prove their worthiness on the pitch itself.

Jacks need not have worried, as they easily dispatched Gills by a count of nine runs to four. Gillingham held the three runs to two lead after four innings, but Swansea scored one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and then four in the seventh to salt away the game and secure the promotion unto themselves. Third base man May punctuated the victory with a home run worth two runs in the ninth, which itself did not affect the end result but which served as a fitting crown for the club.
