League Set-up

Baseball Association of America

The year is 2076 and the world has suffered through the worst 40 years in its recent past. Firstly their was global warming which put a squeeze on global food and water resources. This in turn led to violence inside countries and between countries which ended up leading to the break up of the UN and global conflict. On top of this a spate of epidemics of disease broke out across the globe killing more than the wars did.

The United States of America and its politicians had been quick to see the way things were going and managed to instigate policies that managed to save the country from most of the worst of the ravages that were meted out to the rest of the world. They instigated rules against mass congregations of people. Curfews were put in place and rationing was instigated. To protect the countries borders immigration both in and out of the country was banned and all foreign nationals deported. These policies meant the population of the USA survived the worst of the worlds destruction.

In this mess team sports fell by the wayside or were outlawed as too violent and all sporting associations ceased to exist. All the young people in the population were conscripted into the armed forces and all future children bought up looking at the armed forces being their way for advancement. The only sport played was controlled by the armed forces for fitness only and no large crowd watching was allowed.

As the USA came out of the times of trouble the President and politicians knew they now needed something to keep the masses entertained and take their mind off of their troubles. Also the young people needed a new focus for their future that wasn't militaristic. With this in mind they decided to try and bring back team sports. They searched for the correct sport to bring back that wasn't too physically aggressive and could keep the hand eye co-ordination of the young populace at a level needed if the world ever fell back into war. With this in mind they decided the best sport to bring back was Baseball. This was also aided by the fact that baseball was still used by the armed forces as a way of keeping soldiers fit and improve hand-eye co-ordination.

They rescinded the congregation and curfew laws to allow mass watching of the games and then went and dug up the old MLB rules from prior to the times of trouble. The reading of them found that while they were mostly fit for purpose a few changes were needed. Firstly the drug use policy had to be jettisoned as all the populace was now using steroids just to survive and ward off the epidemics that could still crop up. Also they felt that the old MLB system seemed too unwieldy with too many leagues and teams, also it would be difficult to get that set up back into place on short notice. As well as this with the restriction on foreign immigration still in place there was a need to reduce the number of teams due to the smaller pool of talent available. This made the decision to go with 24 teams in 2 conferences split into 2 divisions the best option for all concerned. It was decided that their wouldn't be any minor leagues set up until the main league was established and the league felt it could support them. The rule of designated hitter was also dropped as they felt that all players needed the hand-eye co-ordination that came from hitting.

A new charter was drawn up by the politicians and handed to the league's newly appointed commissioner who was to work within that to set up the league. Once the league was set up and all teams created then all future decisions would be decided by the commissioner, team owners and new players union at a winter meeting that the league would need to schedule.

The government also insisted that the new league institute a news log on the new hypernet system so that all the fans could look up the monthly reporting that the league would need to produce to keep its charter.

Commissioner Albert Atkins was appointed and then bids were requested for the franchises to gain the owners of these teams as the BASEBALL ASSOCIATION of AMERICA was born. The commissioner decided to go with the 162 game season with both inter conference and inter division games so that both sides of the country could see all of the would be new baseball stars. There would also be an all star game and play-offs where only the top team in each division would qualify so it was the best of the best in the finals. The play-offs would be over 2 rounds. Firstly it would be a conference championship series over 5 games followed by a league championship series played over 7 games to find the best team of the year. Mr Atkins also decided that the best format for trades, free agency etc. was to go back to the model used in the early 2010's as that was seen to be the fairest for team owners and players alike. It was also decided by the commissioner along with the politicians that any time served in the armed forces teams prior to joining the league would count towards the time served in the league so that a differentiation could be made between new players and those with playing experience.

The bidding process for the new teams was fierce but the final 24 bids were put in place late November 2075 and it was decided that the initial draft of new players would take place on January 1 2076, once the teams had their front offices and scouting and coaching staff in place.
