Recently picked up a collection of photos by a New York photographer called Spooner and Wells. The New York Giants in the group are dated in pencil on the back as 1910, but the rosters suggest the images could also be 1909.
One mistaken ID leads to something very intriguing. One of the first two images, clearly of 1912 World Series goat Fred Snodgrass, is labeled "Walker" or "Waller." The third and fourth images feature a player I don't recognize, and they're marked Snodgrass.
If it's a simple switch - if Snodgrass was mistaken for Walker/Waller and vice versa - this could be two images of a one-game major leaguer, John Francis "Red" Waller, who worked one inning for New York on April 27th, 1909. The thumbnail at Baseball Reference (
Red Waller Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com) looks like a match based on the left ear alone.
Again, top two, marked Walker/Waller, depict Snodgrass.
Bottom two, marked Snodgrass...depict Waller?
