The items you want to look at are whether or not the guy has the stats to play the position, which in this case, I think he does, although not at gold glove level, and the guy's work ethic and intelligence. Players with high scores in those traits tend to pick up positions faster than others. Not that an idiot can't learn a new position, but it will take him much more time.
The best place to learn a new position is during spring training or in the minors, so if you want someone to do so, it's best to get them started on it while they're coming up. Also, players with good ratings can play other positions that they don't have a score in, although they won't be as effective.
