Just a note on these Yankee images. They were clearly taken in the spring and the first days of the regular season. The photographer (whoever he/she was) has caught the Yankees at a historic moment, a turning point in their history. The previous season, the Yanks had won their division (for the fifth time since 1976) and gone to the World Series (for the fourth time since 1976). This was a very good Yankee team. Probably within days after the latest of these pictures was taken, Steinbrenner began to destroy that team. He dumped a slew of players and brought in a crowd of strangers from Minnesota and elsewhere, thus confusing and demoralizing everybody. Bob Lemon, who had managed the Yanks in two series, was fired early in 82, to be succeeded by two more men before the season was over. The Yankee dynasty of the late 70's and early 80's was gone, and the franchise would not recover until well into the 1990's.
