If you poke around the forum, you'll see quite a few threads about how to maintain interest. So, you're definitely not alone. There will be lots of advise about running a small league at first so you get to know everyone but it doesn't sound like that's for you.

IMO, you need some connection to the league so that you're rooting for or against Curacao or whoever wins. You could do something like make the managers of your teams your friends, family, ex-bosses, etc. Or, maybe you create one average player for each team and see how they do (maybe giving them the name of a friend, family, ex-boss, etc.). Or, pick 20 corporations you like and 20 you hate (Comcast...) and make a league of those.

The D1 schools is a good idea. You can root for your alma mater and/or local teams and against the University of Michigan. As long as it's something interesting to you.

Bottom line: My advice is to find something so that you have an instant positive or negative reaction to each team you see.
