There will be some fielding ratings that look wrong, but were set intentionally, to try to encourage the AI to roster the right 25 guys, and to use them in the right places. I'd bet that's why Alvarez is rated as he is, because otherwise he probably gets used as a 3B, and then there are likely some knock-on effects where the AI rosters a 1B who should be in AAA, and benches someone who should start.
It's not ideal, but there's really no perfect solution when the AI wants to do something different from what a real life manager wants to do. My personal feeling is that the best policy is to kill experience when a player is very unlikely to play a certain position in the future, and to preserve at least some of it when the player might return to a position. But no matter what solution we choose, some people won't think it's ideal, unfortunately.
