Just because they ask for one year doesn't mean they won't sign for more. But you have to give them what they're worth. So if they cost 8M in arb this year, then would expect 10M in arbitration next year, you've got to give them 2/18 or close to that. And if the guy wants 8M in arbitration this year and will be a free agent next year, then you're not going to be able to buy out free agent years without paying a free agent pricetag for it.

Thanks for the explanations. I'll try playing around with it more, maybe with some back ended contracts that go up over time. I guess I just wasn't expecting such a big change
