I have the same issue but have devised a plan to prevent losing interest.
#1 start small so the base of players and teams is not too extensive
#2 sim for a decade or so that way you have some history and also some former stars to compare to. Think back to when you were young and started following baseball. You never saw Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth play but you learned who they were. you can do the same in your fictional league.
3. After building some history jump into the league. My plan is to build history and then during a specific year jump in and play out one game a week as the "Game of the Week" I think that will introduce me to the current players and teams.
4. Finally, insert some of your favorite (real life or fictional or one you create yourself) players into your league. too me doing this gives you some familiar names to look for as you play.
