What needs to happen is more programs like RBI, and not just for inner city kids. Then you need more coaches to put time in, and in my opinion some of these coaches ought to be paid. Maybe even an academy which would function as a sort-of boarding school. (I create something like this in OOTP as a feeder, players created from 14-17, eligible from ages 18-22.) Regardless, the current Little League/travel leagues aren't enough, especially as middle school sports are being fazed out.
Personally, I quit after back-to-back knee injuries at 14-15 (turns out I have a degenerative knee issue), but I would love to turn to coaching kids and promoting baseball among all kids after I finish school. If more people would turn to establishing new programs, I believe baseball's popularity among kids would rise up again.
