George Borchers 1888
This is the first of a small batch of images used by the S.F. Hess company in its photographic series of California League players dating to 1888 or 1889.
Several of the players graduated to the majors, including pitcher George Borchers, brought to Chicago by Cap Anson to join the rotation of the White Stockings at age 19 in 1888. Borchers only lasted ten starts, then went back to the Coast (he's shown here in the uniform of the Greenhood & Morans team of Oakland). He made one more cameo with the 1895 Louisville Colonels, and continued to play in California until at least 1903.
Baseball-Reference reports that Borchers operated a dairy in Sacramento for 40 years and that his grave there "is one of the highlights of the Old City Cemetery's Beer and Baseball Tour."
