you need to focus on a year when your budget is strapped to know if it is easy or not... of course you can continue to outbid a team until you get the player when you have the budget space and the will to outspend the competition until you get your man.
if you have too much money as a small market team, reduce income or remove luxury tax etc etc. limiting max cash on hand will have a huge impact too.
as fas as the 5yr/775k it is impossible to comment without knowledge of the economics in your league... if that is modern day something is messed up, lol. i assume it is different, and that 775k is a 'ton' of money, relatively speaking, even if it is not as much as the guy could have potentially made with another bidder involved. that's definitely not the game's fault you didn't toss a bid out there before it went too high. sounds more like sour grapes to me
