I'm probably missing something obvious, but why can't you trade him away? The AI is usually willing to take bad contracts if you take back a bad contract (especially one that has a higher yearly amount but less years, so less in total), you may have to sweeten with a prospect the AI likes, but it's usually worth it.
Depending on trade settings, you may even be able to dump him for very little.
