According to "Baseball by the Numbers" (and they are THE authority on this sort of thing), Chance wore #27 throughout his regular season tenure with the Mets. I believe he got #32 in spring training the next year, but he didn't stick around long enough to wear it during the regular season. Baseball-Reference frequently makes no distinction between regular season and spring training numbers. Show them a picture of a guy wearing a number and they'll post it as legit. Love Baseball-Reference--invaluable--but sometimes I'm amazed they haven't listed every modern player as #42, given the annual tribute to Jackie.

This was always my favorite (non-Mets) picture of Dean.
