If you play your games out, good or bad defense will be commented on. "left fielder shows his limited range", "that will go down as a base hit - but in all honesty, second baseman should have gotten it" or conversely ".... out! shortstop shows how it's done!"

And good defenders can hold hitters to worse hits as well. "right fielder gets behind it", cutting off a potential double or triple into a single, or "deep into the hole shortstop makes a lunging grab! he pumps - but holds on to it", infield hit, but runners from 2nd can't score.

However, overall I'd take a big sample size and use statistical ratings, instead of using this "eye" test. The eye test gave Jeter a Gold Glove, despite him being average at best.
