1941-42 Amateur Draft Results
Queensland, Dunwich (BP) – The United Leagues took time out from the regular season to select their future stars at the fifth annual Amateur Draft, held at Queensland’s Waterfront Auditorium.
This year, the Cobourg Red Stockings selected first, followed by the Hespeler Stars and Pulberry Trolleys. Here is a brief sketch of the players taken in the first round:
1st Pick – Cobourg Red Stockings:

3B Shelby Cain (57/80) – 23-years old; 5’-7”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH
The Red Stockings selected a 23-year old infielder from the small town of Port Talbot, Perth that is predicted to reach the major league level very soon. Cain is a very solid hitter with tremendous power and unparalleled plate discipline. Third base is his strongest position defensively and he has good foot speed.
Update: Shortly after making the selection, the Red Stockings announced that they will indeed promote Cain immediately to their major league roster, where he is expected to lead off. It will be interesting to see how he responds to the high expectations.
--------
2nd Pick – Hespeler Stars:

OF Marcus Peyto (22/71) – 21-years old; 5’-11”, 185 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws LH
Peyto projects to be an above-average contact hitter with elite power and good plate discipline. Right field and first base are his strongest positions in field defensively. He has very good speed on the base paths once he gets going, but is not considered an elite base stealer.
--------
3rd Pick – Pulberry Trolleys:

OF Jarod Dwyer (23/74) – 22-years old; 5’-11”, 180 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws RH
Dwyer also projects to be a well-balanced offensive player with decent defensive abilities. He is fast on the base paths and will be able to steal a few bases.
--------
4th Pick – Balmoral Giants:

IF Sean Brearton (22/69) – 18-years old; 5’-10”, 155 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH
Brearton has the potential to become an outstanding contact hitter with just a little pop. He projects to be a capable albeit not great defender with very good speed and bunting skills.
--------
5th Pick – Downie Chiefs:

OF Robin Duerden (21/74) – 19-years old; 6’-1”, 180 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws RH
The fifth straight Braelander selected, Duerden also has the potential to be a very good contact hitter with some pop, but will need to work on his discipline to maximize his value at the plate. A versatile fielder, Duerden is only average defensively and on the base paths.
--------
6th Pick – Sherburn Tigers:

SP Jim Ferguson (22/74) – 20-years old; 5’-10”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws LH
The first pitcher and first non-Braelander selected in this year’s draft, the 20-year old Ferguson from Pompton Lakes, New Jersey has above average stuff, outstanding movement and pretty good command. He is able to change speeds nicely. If he is able to put it all together, he could be a future ace.
--------
7th Pick – Wolseley Unions:

OF Rizalino Ringor (22/77) – 19-years old; 6’-0”, 180 lbs.; Hits SH/Throws RH
The Unions pick up an outstanding offensive prospect with great contact, power and patience. Ringor boast tremendous speed and base stealing instincts. Only his defensive game betrays any weakness.
--------
8th Pick – Fort Richmond Generals:

SS Matthew Welson (22/56) – 21-years old; 5’-9”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH
Welson is an interesting prospect. While he has poor eye/discipline (30/40), he somehow will be terrific at avoiding strikes (45/80)? At any rate, he is another speedy player with fearsome base-stealing instincts and some defensive skills, especially at second base.
--------
Here is the rest of the first round, selections 9-16:
9th Pick – Queensland Eagles:
1B Andre Gale (21/66) – contact (30/55), gap power (40/50) and eye (25/50). 19-years old; 6’-1”, 205 lbs.; pull hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH
The New Zealander projects to be major power hitter, coupled with decent contact. Defense and speed however, are not part of his repertoire.
--------
10th Pick – Cambria Cannons:
OF Brian Cosey (23/76) – contact (45/60), gap power (35/45) and eye (30/45). 20-years old; 5’-11”, 175 lbs.; normal hitter; Hits LH/Throws LH
The young outfielder should be a very good line-drive hitter with excellent speed and solid defense.
--------
11th Pick – Embro Suns:
C César Morales (22/80) – contact (45/70), gap power (40/55) and eye (25/45). 19-years old; 5’-8”, 175 lbs.; pull hitter; Hits RH/Throws LH
The first catcher taken in the draft, the Dominican Morales boast good contact and power potential, but will need to work on his plate discipline and defense behind the plate.
--------
12th Pick – Brunswick Legends:
SP Tatsui Maruyama (23/72) – stuff (35/40), movement (60/65) and control (35/55). 22-years old; 6’-4”, 210 lbs.; groundball tendency; 89-91 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH
The second pitcher selected, Maruyama is considered an outstanding prospect with above- average stuff, top-notch movement and solid control. He already has four solid pitches: fastball (40/40), slider (30/45), splitter (40/45) and forkball (40/45). A fifth, his changeup (20/25) is still a work in progress.
--------
13th Pick – Wellington Athletics:
SS Mac Medley (20/51) – contact (30/45), gap power 30/45) and eye (25/45). 19-years old; 5’-9”, 160 lbs.; spray hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH
An average prospect with decent but not great hitting ability. Has outstanding speed and should be a competent fielder.
--------
14th Pick – Kingston Pelicans:
IF Wen-huan Liu (22/70) – contact (40/50), gap power (40/45) and eye (45/60). 22-years old; 6’-2”, 21 lbs.; normal hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH
The 22-year old from Taiwan has the potential to be a clean-up hitter with good power potential and patience at the plate. Defense and speed are not strengths, however.
--------
15th Pick – Braeland City Monarchs:
SP Harold Barr (20/63) – stuff (30/35), movement (45/60) and control (30/60). 19-years old; 5’-10”, 165 lbs.; groundball tendency; 86-88 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH
The second player from New Jersey selected, Barr has OK stuff and movement, but with excellent control. Throws three pitches: fastball (35/40), curveball (25/40) and splitter (35/45).
--------
16th Pick – Stratford Barons:
SP Alberto León (21/66) – stuff (30/35), movement (55/65) and control (30/50). 20-years old; 6’-3”, 195 lbs.; groundball tendency; 84-86 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH
The pitcher from Panama has OK stuff to go along with top-notch movement and above-average control. His best pitch is his changeup (35/55) to go with an OK fastball (35/35) and slider (35/35).
