if it is more than he expects to get on the FA market, he will take it.
how much does morale and other factors influence the decisions? no idea, but it's at least possible.
maybe that decisions requires an extra 500k/yr above a value unknown and unseen by us for him to accept it and not go to FA.
i wouldn't expect it to outweigh a significant loss of income though - just as it would not in real life.
approach it as normal. if he has value, go for the compensation pick. if not, let him go freely.
