You are correct about my situation, but I think it actually did happen in real life, with the Mets deciding not to sign Michael Bourn because it would cost them a draft pick; I think they "should have" had a protected pick, but because the Astros did not sign Brady Aiken the previous year, they were bumped out of the top 10 and did not have a protected pick. I think the real-life rule was then changed to make such a situation still a protected pick, but I don't know if that change was reflected in OOTP.
