Birdie Tebbetts 1954

I always think of managers before 1965 or so as a grizzled, veteran bunch who were getting a second or third shot at helming a club. In point of fact, six of the eight skippers George Heyer captured for SPORT's September 1956 issue were still on their first major league job, and Birdie Tebbetts of the Reds was tied with Walt Alston and Stan Hack as senior NL manager in point of continuous service - at just three years!

Tebbetts would last in Cincinnati until 1958 (his first two full-time successors would be Mayo Smith and Fred Hutchinson), later manage Milwaukee and Cleveland, and serve as a super scout and floating executive for the Yankees well into the '90s.
