Grady Hatton enjoyed an 11-year major league career, mostly with the Reds, between 1946-56. After two seasons as a player-manager for San Antonio, he was hired by the Cubs midway throgh the 1960 season as a player-coach.
Joining Charlie Grimm's staff, it was yet another 90-loss season for the Cubbies, and Grimm would be replaced by Lou Boudreau in one of the oddest moves ever by a major league club, Former Indians player-manager Boudreau came out of the Cubs' broadcast booth, and Grimm took his place behind the mike.
Meanwhile, Hatton batted a brisk .342 with seven RBIs in 28 games for the Cubs, mostly as a pinch-hitter. He would move on to the still-forming Houston Colt 45s, managing in the majors and minors, serving as vice president and director of player personel. After managing the now-Astros from `66-68, he scouted and coached for the team through 1972.
