This was the deal that netted New York Chris Chambliss for Peterson, Steve Kline, Tom Buskey, and Fred Beene. It is impossible to reconstruct the reaction in New York, which was of anger and horror that the Yankees had surrendered "half their pitching staff" just to get a first baseman. Just more proof that the fans and media are often wildly wrong.
I also never understood how the Yankees thought they were fixing things after the Peterson/Mike Kekich "life swap" by dealing Kekich to Cleveland in 1973, and then Peterson to the same team early in '74.
