the only time it is difficult is when you want a balanced schedule and there are an odd number of teams invovled. the auto-generation of schedules will have 2 days off on occassion.
probably the easiest way would be to make use of 2-game series instead of 3 or more.
making a schedule can be easy...
e.g.
i ignore things that aren't really coded into the game... e.g. television's influence on the schedule. if you make all the teams have the same days off, it's 10x easier to make the schedule. virtually no thought needed at that point.
weather? who cares if detroit plays away more at the beginning of the season... again the following year will ruin that plan of playing cold-weather teams away at warmer climates to start the year.
travel? again it doesn't matter and whatever ingenious setup you create will only be valid the first year - unless you make more scheduels to rotate through on your own.
