Sounds like your problem came because you installed the patch over a steam install.
The patch isn't meant for steam users. Notice the big red disclaimer at the top of Markus' post in the
patch thread.
I'd recommend saving your league, uninstalling again and then simply reinstalling the steam version, without the patch. That should allow you to load your game. The patch will be updated for steam shortly, you'll just have to wait a bit longer.
