I think the fonts are set within the game and can not be specified by the user to my knowledge (beyond what you have done).
What screen res do you use? Can you post a screen shot of what you mean? Not sure I 100% understand the issue.
I use 1600 x 1000 and don't have issues with seeing the ball flight, though I don't use wide mode much.
