George Stone 1903
There are plenty of photos of George Stone in his St. Louis uniform during his heyday with the Browns, 1905-1910; he led the American League in hits in his first full season and in batting average in his second. Stone made his major league debut in 1903 with the Boston team that went on to win the World Series. He struck out twice in two substitute at-bats (not yet called pinch-hitting appearances). Stone was noted for the extreme crouch that he stood in at the plate, which was not favored by Manager Jimmy Collins. Early in the 1903 season Collins sent Stone to Milwaukee of the American Association, where he played through 1904. (The cap does not match the 1903 Boston uniform; I suspect that this photo was taken in spring training and that Stone did not yet have a complete uniform. In fact, it may date from spring training of 1905; he could be wearing a Browns cap with his Boston shirt.)
