McAuliffe/Taylor 2nd Base Platoon
Besides being the everyday second baseman for the Tigers for several years, including the World's Championship season of 1968 and all-star selections for three years (1965-1967), McAuliffe was platooned late in his career. For three seasons (1971-1973) Detroit had a very successful second base platoon of the lefty hitting Mc Auliffe with righty hitting Tony Taylor. That combination helped the Tigers to win the 1972 American League East division title. McAuliffe had an off year at the plate (.240), but Taylor picked him up by hitting .303, so overall the Tigers got good production from their platoon that year
McAuliffe had some pop, belting 197 career home runs and topping 20 home runs three seasons..
